The south has had it hard the past couple years. I volunteered through my church to help clean up after the tragedy and was stricken by the number of people left without homes, without food, without any hope. I spent a week and a half clearing out flotsam and jetsam so people could return to their flooded homes and start to rebuild their lives. Now, after so much time has passed, they continue to have problem with home security New Orleans. It saddens me to think that those people I met and helped have had an even harder time with thieves and renegades trying to take what little they have left. I wish I told go back and teach the people about New Orleans home security, if only to save them having to go through more heartache. I wish we lived in a world where the only security system we needed was the one that each of us has in our heart, but we don’t. It makes me grateful to have my security system, even though I’ve never used it. Having a security system allows me to go and give of my time to help those people in need, because I’m not worried of anyone breaking into my house while I’m out serving my fellow man.

Safety Cameras Not Historic Enough for French Quarter Preservationists

Crime-fighting technology can help businesses stay safe and secure and help catch criminals. However a group of preservationists is dedicated to preserving the authentic feel and flavor of the French quarter of New Orleans and has refused permits for surveillance cameras. The cameras are being installed with some financial assistance from ProjectNOLA, a group dedicated to keeping New Orleans safe and secure. They are smaller than most video cameras, and the area businesses want them in light of recent violence in the area.

Video cameras are one of the greatest tools that can be used in the fight against crime. Often, just having a surveillance camera is a deterrent – no criminal wants to be caught on film, which can be used as evidence against them in court. When a business or home security alarm system is paired with security cameras, and triggered to record when an alarm goes off, the burglars have a much greater chance of being caught.

It is important for the preservationists and ProjectNOLA to come to an agreement over the camera issue. Of course no one wants to deface the historic French Quarter streets, but if the business owners do not feel safe, and are left unprotected, they may be forced to relocate their businesses elsewhere simply for the safety of themselves and their customers. It would be a tragedy if New Orleans, a city trying to rebuild and redefine itself, can’t provide the safe environment it needs for residents and tourists alike.
